Season 6 has more twists and turns in it than Season 4 did to us. You HAVE to buy the DVDs so that you can rewind and repeat the shows just to catch each twist. And this season doesn’t jerk your heart out like seasons 2-3 &4 do. Of course they always put it back. The comedy is still in the show which is part of it’s appeal, along with the Gotcha enemy factor!! (Gibbs’s S*** eating grin when the dirtbag is caught and they have no where to go with it!!) Not a fan so far of the spin off (NCIS LA) coming from this season but, maybe they can tweek it before they air their own show and not be connected with the original. NCIS pilot from JAG didn’t have the spirit that it has on it’s own either but, you know you want the copies of it to keep things in order. Love Gibbs in Heartland which also debuts his oldest son playing a young Gibbs….Sean Harmon. Who also returns in Deliverance for the same character. Has Ralph Waite (Father from the Walton’s) playing Gibbs Father. South By Southwest has Gibbs and DiNozzo on horseback and Gibbs shooting down an enemy helicopter which is priceless for the Gotcha factor. DiNozzo makes a poor horseman & returns with saddles sores which is the comedy part from the very beginning. More secrets are revealed this season, they didn’t take the easy road with Deliverance that most people would have thought that they were taking. Appreciated that a lot. This season has to be one of my favorites. Have watched the DVR this season til I have nearly worn out the channel selector, yes, will be purchasing the DVDs in Aug 2009, wouldn’t want to break up the entire series I own (Including the 2 DVD’s from the JAG season 8 pilot episodes), and we will get the bonus features on the DVD’s which are always entertaining and informative. Also very happy they are releasing the DVD’s BEFORE the season 7 return so that we can go thru and watch them all again and get caught up. You will literally discover more secrets each time you watch it.

This show has been rivetting since its birth during season eight of JAG. Led by the charismatic, unswerving Leroy Jethro Gibbs – the NCIS team has a blend of ecletic characters, from Israeli officer Ziva David, to the whacky Abby Schuto in the forensics Lab – complimented by Tony Dinozzo and McGhee, a computer nerd the cast is rounded off by an eccentric and ‘tale-telling’ Doctor Mallard, nicknamed Ducky. This season had so many twists and turns it was difficult to see how they could have kept the plots together, yet together they were – slick, and engrossing. Gibbs is one leader that marshalls his troops without apology or comfort – Dinozzo doesn’t call him Boss for nothing! A clip to the back of the head if the men get out of line is enough of a slap down. The plot that runs throughout the show will beguile and excite. Season seven here we come!

“On a Clear Day” boils down to a story we have seen a thousands times: the underdog who struggles valiantly against all odds to reclaim his dignity and (more importantly) learn about Life. Think “The Bad News Bears,” “Calendar Girls” and “The Full Monty.” What rescues this film from the banality of repetition is the superb cast, the inclusion of neat motifs and the diversion of a few interesting subplots.

The main subplot relates to an unresolved tragedy in Frank’s family that keeps him from being opening up to his son. Then, Frank’s wife is secretly trying to get her bus-driving license to supplement the diminished family income, something she doesn’t want Frank to find out.

There’s not much suspense in the film — in the sense that only a completely boorish or devilishly artsy director would withhold some form of ultimate triumph — but it’s fun watching this cast of misfits get there. These include the Chinese cook who can’t stand up to abuse from his customers and suppliers; the goofy young lad (Billy Boyd in a post-LOTR/Pippin role) who wants (but can’t manage) to be just like Frank; and the middle-aged man equally afraid of women and sailing. The strained relationship between Frank (Peter Mullan) and his son Rob (Jamie Sives) is exquisitely painful, and unfolds through marvelous scenes in which neither says a word, but in which the audience knows exactly what each is thinking and feeling. A phenomenal piece of acting, writing and editing that raises this film from a hum-drum 3 stars to a more exalted 4.

ON A CLEAR DAY is a wee Scottish film that is full to overflowing with heart and fine performances. Writer Alex Rose and Director Gaby Dellal have managed to explore the psyches of the ordinary folk who face the crises of unemployment, of strained family relations and the fear of loss of pride in one’s self and have created not only a sympathetic story with a message, but have also delivered their story with humor and a glint of the eye that makes the whole thing work – very well indeed.

Frank (Peter Mullen) watches as the last ship he will ever have worked on is launched as his wife Joan (Brenda Blethyn) and his son Rob (Jamie Sives), daughter in law Angela (Johdi May), and grandson twins celebrate the launching. We soon learn that Frank is now jobless, that there is friction with his son Rob (who had been a twin but the other twin died at age 7) who doesn’t have a traditional job but instead is a stay at home Dad. Money is tight and Joan secretly is training to be a bus driver. Franks cronies Eddie (Sean McGinley), Danny (Billy Boyd), and Norman (Ron Cook) see Frank slipping into depression. Frank spends his time swimming at the public swimming pool and while there he sees three young physically challenged boys trying and by will power succeeding to swim. Frank decides he needs to prove himself to his friends, family and himself and decides to swim the English Channel. He enlists his buddy Chan (Benedict Wong) and eventually his cronies and they prepare for the challenging swim. The manner in which this drive influences his marriage, his relationship with his son and his perception of himself is the driver for the very tender ending.

The cast is first class all the way, acting with that inimitable UK fashion of finding reality in the simplest of characters. The story is a joy to watch for its understated manner and for the glowing theme of the film. Recommended for all audiences. Grady Harp, July 06

In my opinion, Rita Hayworth is one of the most, if not THE MOST, glamorous woman to grace the silver screen. It is gratifying to see her life explored on a dvd that looks at her skills as an actress, shows the troubled life she led, and the discusses the end of her life and the disease that stole her mind and memories. The dvd talks to people she knew, such as Ann Miller, as well as the likes of Nicole Kidman, who was influenced by her work. Princess Yasmin Kahn also speaks about her mother as we follow her life as a dancing partner with her father, through her years as Columbia Pictures’ biggest star to her later years when she yearned to be known more as an actress and less as a star. This set contains two dvds, one being a rarer seen movie Rita starred in called, “Trouble in Texas”. If you want to see really classic Rita, however, get her films, “Blood and Sand”, “The Lady from Shanghai” and “Gilda”, her most famous role. This is an nice addition to any Hayworth fan’s collection. I hope that this dvd will introduce the beautiful Rita to a newer generation of fans.

This is a wonderful and lengthy portrait of my favorite movie star of the 1940s. All the colors of the legendary Hayworth’s life – her humble beginnings, her difficulty living up to her bombshell image, her troubled marriages, and her sad descent into madness – they’re all here and they all add up to a remarkable woman. You’ll be saddened as you see that disappointment and heartbreak plagued Rita her entire life, but you’ll see the important contributions she made to film and to popular culture.

I do not agree at all with the reviewer who said that this program was poorly written and quickly and haphazardly thrown together. On the contrary, there is home video footage of Rita and her family, and interviews with a few of those who worked with her. There are even edited/deleted interview takes; Juanita Moore’s recollection of how some of Rita’s costars and crew saw her as just “Mexican” is most interesting. And to address the issue that the reviewer had with contemporary personalities participating in the documentary, I think it’s wonderful that today’s actresses recognize the trails that Rita blazed.

WARNING: Anyone who knows about the final few years of Rita’s life may not be shocked at the details, but all will be heartbroken. If you are a fan, brace yourself because the details of her final days are absolutely devastating.

Overall, this is a superb addition to any classic film fan’s DVD library. To my knowledge, it is the only documentary of Ms. Hayworth’s life that is available, so on this laurel alone it is invaluable. But it is so much more than that; it’s an unforgettable, poignant peek into the life of a remarkable cinema icon.

Charles Burnett is one of America’s most underrated filmmakers working today. Unlike his African-American contemporary, Spike Lee, he is not an outspoken personality in his own right, preferring to let the work speak for itself. In many respects, his films are self-aware in terms of social conscience as John Sayles’ own work. As a result, Burnett also finds it hard to get his movies widely distributed. The Glass Shield was his attempt to reach a wider audience by having Miramax distribute it. Sadly, like Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man, it was subjected to the same lackluster release by Miramax head honcho, Harvey Weinstein and promptly disappeared.

Stylistically, Burnett is not as in-your-face as Spike Lee, preferring to let the content and the characters deliver his message. That’s not to say his films don’t have their own style-The Glass Shield is a well-shot movie (adopting a colour scheme that reflects Johnson’s comic book fantasies)-it just doesn’t cause unnecessary attention to itself.

There is an audio commentary by writer/director Charles Burnett and composer Stephen James Taylor. Burnett points out that the cops are conditioned not to trust anyone before they are sent out on patrol and this often explains their hostile behaviour on the streets. This is an intelligent, conversational track with lots of excellent observations by both men with some good stories told by Burnett.

“A Conversation with Charles Burnett” is a featurette that alternates between clips from the movie and Burnett talking.

“Film Scoring with Stephen James Taylor” explores this composer’s creative process. He drew from all kinds of musical genres with Negro spiritual melodies as the score’s heart. He also talks about the origins of key musical cues from the movie.

Finally, there is a theatrical trailer.

One of the most acurate portrayals of american police departments in the good ole USA. A good story told from a real perspective. Intense drama,lying racist cops,and brilliant African-American & Latino lawyers. The story follows two naive young rookie cops, a black male and a white female, who learn a hard lesson about trying to join an all white male police department they really don’t belong in. The only other accurate potrayal of dirty cops on film, that I know of is “Dark Blue” with Kurt Russell. Check it out.

Waiting for Guffman is another wonderful mockumentary from actor/director Christopher Guest (Spinal Tap, Best in Show) and cowriter/partner in crime Eugene Levy. The film highlights the big dreams and raw (very raw) talent of the five stars of �Red, White and Blaine,� the celebratory musical commemorating Blaine, Missouri�s 150th anniversary.

The humor in Guffman is of the cut-above variety, founded on relationships and underlined by the characters� hopes. Guest plays Corky St. Clair, a refugee from Broadway who has found a niche for his special abilities as the de facto King of Theater in Blaine. Levy plays the town dentist who is auditioning for the very first time. Parker Posey is the perky, poignant and perhaps pathetic ingenue who works at the Dairy Queen. Catherine O�Hara and Fred Willard prove the maxim that matching sweatsuits betray an unhappy marriage. Bob Balaban plays Lloyd Miller the music director who is grounded in reality, although his suggestion that the cast might spend some of the rehearsal time actually practicing the songs and dances is met with hostility. As an ex-theater major from Hays, Kansas I found the characters 100% real even while laughing at the absurdity of their belief in the possibility that they might take their show to Broadway.

The musical itself would make a great cult movie in the vein of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The events commemorated include the settling of Blaine (in which a wagon train leader manages to convince an entire group of people that they�ve already reached California), the famous UFO sighting and alien encounter, and the founding of the stool-making business which drove Blaine�s economy for generations.

The DVD is worth seeing just for the extra features. The commentary by Guest and Levy is more informative than funny. I got the impression that they were distracted from the commentary by the brilliance of certain scenes in the movie. The extra scenes, however, were hilarious. Waiting for Guffman was shot from a bare-bones script and the actors were encouraged to improvise most of the dialogue. From over 60 hours of footage the best scenes were selected: three of the original scenes that didn�t get into the musical, an alternate ending for O�Hara and Willard, scenes with characters that never made it into the movie, and an explanation for why the dentist�s wife has a Wisconsin accent.

“Waiting for Guffman” is generally considered the follow-up to the now-legendary rockumentary “This is Spinal Tap.” Despite having a different director (this gem is directed by its star, Christopher Guest), iut has the same brand of straight-faced hilarity from one hysterical moment to the next. It’s one of the funniest and most underrated films of the 1990s.

The dinky but proud town of Blaine Missouri (the “footstool capitol” of the world) is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a (for them) major celebration of civic pride. Self-exiled theatrical producer Corky St. Claire (Guest) happens to be living in this town, after the failure of his last New York show (he almost burned it down). Corky sees this as an opportunity to get back to Broadway, by creating the historical musical “Red, White and Blaine.” In theory, the musical will outline the town’s history (complete with a visit by President McKinley and UFOs… on different occasions, of course).

Corky is even more elated when a Broadway scout, Mr. Guffman, is supposed to arrive to gauge “Red White and Blaine’s” Broadway potential. This is his ticket out of there… and ditto for the slightly odd citizens who are cast in the play: a deadpan Dairy Queen clerk (Parker Posey), a pair of bickering travel agents (Catherine O’Hara and Fred Willard), and a dentist with a lazy eye (the incomparable Eugene Levy). Despite a round of problems, cast losses, and the temporary loss of an irate Corky, the show must go on. But will Mr. Guffman arrive in time to see it?

In small relatively unknown towns, the people often dream of big things. Quite a few of them also have intense civic pride over stuff that nobody else could care less about (crop circles?). The heart of “Waiting For Guffman” is poking fun at the absurdities of middle America, but not a cruel way. You laugh with the “ship of fools,” not at them.

Every scene in this movie brims with deadpan hilarity — all the more striking because of all the ad-libbing that went on. The humor is not the fart-joke variety; it includes everything from Ron’s… well, reduction surgery to “We consider ourselves bi-coastal if you consider the Mississippi River one of the coasts.” It’s pure brilliance from beginning to end — especially the end, when we get to see the “Red White and Blaine” musical. Guest’s comic talent is in full bloom there.

Guest is the soul of this film — his flamboyant, arty theatrical producer is a big fish trying to get out the tiny pond. Fred Willard (in his usual grinning obnoxious dolt role) and Catherine O’Hara are hysterical as a not-so-happily married couple. And Eugene Levy — always a treat — is subtlely funny every time he makes his eye wander.

Underrated and brimming over with kindly satire, “Waiting for Guffman” is rivalled only by “Spinal Tap.” A comedy treasure.

Well, filmmakers should aim high, they say. And Richard Kelly shot the moon on his highly-anticipated follow-up to cult sensation Donnie Darko, which expands the apocalyptic mood of that movie and blows it up tenfold. Set during the election season of 2008, Southland Tales proposes a series of apparently linked events: the reappearance of a vanished movie star (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), now an amnesiac; the bizarre doubling of a policeman (Seann William Scott in two roles); the development of an energy source from ocean waves; and the presence of an Iraq War veteran (Justin Timberlake) who seems to be watching everything, and narrating some of it. Not that the narration helps; even with voice-over (reportedly added after the film’s disastrous debut at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival), Southland Tales doesn’t come close to making sense, let alone at the minimum level of dangling a carrot to lead the audience along (even Mulholland Drive had a semblance of murder mystery to be solved, or not). The cast is loaded with Saturday Night Live cut-ups, but only Jon Lovitz connects, and in other roles people like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christopher Lambert, Bai Ling, and John Larroqutte are utterly mystifying, by no fault of their own. In some of the musical sequnces Kelly gets in stride, but it’s easy to create drama in a three-minute music video, and harder to do over two and a half hours. Some top critics rushed to champion the movie, as though flying in the face of philistinism, so feel free to try out this incoherent pastiche for yourself. –Robert Horton

The filmmakers make hay with spoofs of prison films and, particularly, of the Oscars themselves, in an award-show send-up that includes such real-life stars as Raqul Welch and Pia Zadora–and Drebin being mistaken for Phil Donahu.
